ABSTRACT
INTRODUCTION:This report presents first bilateral simultaneous implantation with fully implantable middle ear hearing devices.Candidacy criteria, audiological results are reported and discussed.MATERIAL/METHODS:One patient with moderate bilateral sensorineural hearing loss.Bilateral implantation of Carina devices was performed within one surgical session.Air-and bone-conduction thresholds were obtained pre-and postoperatively.Pure-tone thresholds, speech discrimination were tested postoperatively(unaided-aided).Follow-up time was 9 months.RESULTS:Differences between post-and preoperative thresholds were clinically not significant.Free-field results confirm audiological benefits.CONCLUSIONS:Results suggest that bilateral simultaneous implantation with Carina device is an efficient procedure, and offers the opportunity to start aural rehabilitation with bilateral implants from beginning. It might be an alternative to binaural conventional hearing aids for selected patients.
